A Lexile-based reading programme that personalizes instruction to every learner—and is delivering the greatest gains where they matter most.
The Reading Scholar Programme is part of NPS Super 4’s Guided Learning philosophy of personalized instruction. Designed for students in Grades 1–5 across the NPS Super 4 schools (NPS Whitefield, NPS East, NPS Marathahalli, and NPS Silk Board), it begins by assessing students using Lexile® measures before matching them with reading material aligned to their demonstrated reading ability rather than grade level.
Programme assessment data showed that students who began in the lowest Lexile bands recorded the greatest average gains in reading during the 2025–26 academic year, reflecting the school’s broader Guided Learning philosophy of meeting every learner where they are and helping them move forward.
What is a Lexile® Measure?
A Lexile® measure is a standardized framework that measures reader ability and text complexity on the same scale, enabling educators to match students with appropriately challenging reading material that supports continuous reading growth.
Why Did the Weakest Readers Improve the Most?
Programme assessment data revealed a clear pattern. Students who began in the lowest Lexile bands demonstrated the greatest average gains in reading over the academic year.
This pattern—the strongest gains occurring exactly where intervention is most needed—is precisely what well-designed personalized learning is intended to achieve. When struggling readers receive material that matches their current ability, they build confidence, practise successfully, and make sustained progress.

A child who reads well is better equipped to engage with ideas independently, process information meaningfully, and develop the curiosity that drives lifelong learning.
How the Reading Scholar Programme Personalizes Reading Using Lexile® Measures
The Reading Scholar Programme begins with structured reading assessments that place students into Lexile reading bands according to demonstrated ability rather than age or grade.
This distinction lies at the heart of personalization. Two children sitting in the same classroom may read at vastly different levels, and teaching them with identical material serves neither child well.
Each week, students receive comprehension passages calibrated to their individual reading level, accompanied by questions designed to strengthen vocabulary, inferential thinking, and contextual understanding. The aim is to provide every learner with reading material that is sufficiently challenging to promote growth without becoming discouraging.
From Learning to Read to Reading to Learn
Why do volcanoes erupt? How do honeybees communicate? What causes the monsoon? How do comets travel across space?
The Reading Scholar Programme uses engaging passages drawn from science, geography, mythology, history, and space exploration to develop comprehension, vocabulary, and stronger reading habits.
The belief behind the programme is simple: before a child can learn anything else, the child must first learn to read well. Everything else—mathematics, science, history, the ability to follow instructions, and the capacity to reason through a problem—rests upon this one foundational skill.
How Was the School Library Redesigned Around Reading Levels?
To reinforce personalized reading beyond the classroom, the school library was reorganized using the same Lexile framework that underpins the Reading Scholar Programme. Rather than being arranged only by genre or author, books are also categorized according to Lexile reading levels, allowing students to independently identify books that match their current reading ability.
This simple change encourages independent reading while building confidence and fluency. As students’ reading ability grows, they naturally progress to books with higher Lexile levels.
Teachers observed that students who once hesitated to pick up books became more willing to read once book selection aligned with their ability. The library shelf is no longer intimidating—it is an invitation.
“I used to spend a lot of time convincing reluctant readers to try a book. Now they come in knowing what they’re looking for. That confidence didn’t come from us pushing harder—it came from the shelves meeting them where they were.”

What Role Does AI Play in the Reading Scholar Programme?
As the programme expanded across reading levels and subject areas, maintaining personalization at scale became increasingly important.
AI-assisted tools help generate diverse reading passages across genres and themes, enabling educators to efficiently create personalized learning material while preserving variety and quality.
Technology serves as an enabler of personalization, not a substitute for teacher expertise.
Every AI-generated passage undergoes a rigorous human review process to evaluate age-appropriateness, pedagogical alignment, contextual relevance, and language accuracy. Teachers remain firmly at the centre of the learning process, ensuring academic quality while making large-scale personalization possible.
What Is Guided Learning, and How Does It Connect to This Programme?
The Reading Scholar Programme reflects the broader Guided Learning philosophy that underpins education at NPS Super 4.
Guided Learning recognizes that children do not all learn at the same pace or in the same way. Rather than expecting every learner to move through identical content at the same speed, it seeks to understand each child’s current level and provide the guidance needed to help them progress confidently from there.
“What we are trying to move away from is the assumption that every child in the same classroom learns at the same pace. Personalization is not about isolating learners—it is about understanding where each child currently is and helping them move forward.”
— Tanuj Garg, Director, NPS Super 4 (NPS Whitefield, NPS East, NPS Marathahalli, and NPS Silk Board)
Ultimately, the Reading Scholar Programme reflects a simple belief: meaningful learning begins when instruction starts with the learner rather than the curriculum. By combining personalized instruction, thoughtfully designed interventions, and the responsible use of technology, the programme demonstrates how schools can help every learner become a confident, capable reader.
