Madonna makes a rare live-action appearance in The Studio, her first major acting role in over 20 years
The cameo reunites Madonna with Julia Garner, who was cast as her in the canceled biopic after intensive training
The Studio’s second season is set to premiere on Apple TV+ in March 2027
Madonna is getting the Hollywood comeback treatment – this time with a little help from The Studio.
As the Queen of Pop, 67, prepares to revisit her abandoned biopic in a very unexpected way during Season 2 of Apple TV+’s Emmy-winning Hollywood satire, Chase Sui Wonders is teasing a cameo that sounds like everything fans could hope for.
“It was better than you ever could have possibly imagined,” Wonders, 30, told Entertainment Tonight of Madonna’s appearance on the series.
She added, “Madonna is the coolest—everyone knows this, but she’s also funny as hell and such a hard worker, and really was excited to show up for our show, which felt very surreal. And Julia is a star, an absolute star.”
Filmed in March in Venice, Italy, Madonna’s cameo alongside Julia Garner carries an extra layer of Hollywood irony, offering a playful nod to the long-awaited Madonna biopic that ultimately never made it to the screen. The appearance also reunites Madonna with Garner, 32, who was originally cast to portray the pop icon in the canceled project after undergoing an intensive Madonna bootcamp that tested her singing and dancing abilities.
Following a location scouting trip during last year’s Venice International Film Festival, Seth Rogen was photographed filming the second season of The Studio in the Italian city with Madonna and Garner. Michael Keaton and Donald Glover were also spotted on set, alongside returning cast members Bryan Cranston, Kathryn Hahn, Ike Barinholtz and Wonders.
Madonna and Garner even leaned into the moment off-screen, sharing a video of themselves riding through Venice’s canals while lip-syncing to Madonna’s 1984 classic “Like a Virgin.”
The appearance arrives after Universal Pictures canceled Madonna’s planned self-directed biopic in 2023. The film had gone through multiple drafts, including versions written by Diablo Cody and Erin Cressida Wilson, before the studio ultimately pulled the plug. Madonna later explained that the scale of her story was part of the challenge.
“I’ve had an extraordinary life. I’ve had a huge life, so I needed a big budget. You know what I mean?” Madonna told Interview in June 2026.
The Confessions II artist teased her return to the screen in March when she shared a photo of herself reading a script while in Venice, captioning the post “The Italian job.” She was later photographed on the set of The Studio, confirming her involvement in the upcoming season.
It marks one of Madonna’s first major live-action appearances in more than two decades. Her previous acting credits include Evita, Desperately Seeking Susan, Dick Tracy and A League of Their Own, as well as appearances in Die Another Day, Swept Away and Will & Grace. She also voiced a character in the animated film Arthur and the Invisibles.
For The Studio, Madonna’s cameo fits perfectly into the series’ larger theme of Hollywood personalities playing exaggerated versions of themselves. The show follows Matt Remick as he navigates the chaos of running a fictional movie studio, with Season 1 featuring guest appearances from stars including Dave Franco, Zoë Kravitz, and Martin Scorsese.
The series became a major awards-season success after its first season, winning a record-breaking 13 Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series. It also earned major recognition at the Golden Globes, thanks to its Sal Saperstein bit.

Rogen, 44, previously explained that many of the show’s celebrity cameos were written with specific performers in mind.
“It was all about the stories of the episodes and kind of who served the various storylines and it was pretty specific for the most part,” he said. “We would write it to our idealized version of who we could get maybe, and we very often got those people, which was shocking.”
The Studio’s second season is currently scheduled to premiere on Apple TV+ in March 2027.
