Katie Holmes is reportedly backing her daughter Suri after reports that the 20-year-old has dropped her estranged father Tom Cruise's last name.
Tom, 64, and Katie, 47, divorced in 2012, leading to a bitter custody battle that has left Suri, 20, and him estranged since 2013. Suri reportedly hasn't had a strong relationship with her father for most of her life, but she hadn't publicly acknowledged their distance until she didn't use Tom's last name in the graduation pamphlet for her LaGuardia High School ceremony in June 2024.
Public records show that Suri is registered to vote in Pennsylvania, where she currently lives. The 20-year-old is registered in Pennsylvania's Allegheny County under the name Suri Noelle, indicating that it is her legal name.
However, an insider claimed that Katie hadn't pushed her daughter toward the decision, which fully came from Suri.
"Katie wasn’t surprised by Suri’s decision to legally drop 'Cruise' from her last name because that’s just who Suri is," a source told Page Six. "This also wasn’t something that happened overnight. It was a decision that evolved over time, and Katie respected Suri’s process every step of the way."
The insider added that Katie believes her daughter is "old enough to make her own decisions, and she fully supports whatever she feels is right for her."
Suri legally removed Cruise as her surname, changing her last name to Noelle.

The source added that Katie was proud of how independent her daughter was and had raised her to "think for herself and become her own person."
"She’s an adult now, and Katie has always believed those kinds of personal decisions are hers to make," they noted.
The former married couple's divorce documents show that Katie was given "sole custody" of Suri, and Tom agreed to pay Katie $40,000 a month until Suri turned 18, per the Daily Mail.
Before moving to Pennsylvania for college, Suri resided in New York with her mother, Katie, where her name-change requests were either automatically sealed or sealed upon request. At this time, it's unclear when Suri Noelle became her legal name; however, she's been using it publicly for years.

She previously used the name for her high school graduation in June 2024.
Suri also chose not to utilize her dad's moniker on the casting sheet of her senior year high school play The Addams Family: A New Musical, as per a report from Yahoo.
A source told Page Six then that Suri was “showing praise for her mother” by using Noelle, which is Katie's middle name. Additionally, another insider claimed that the then-teen wanted to “avoid the paparazzi,” establish her “own identity” and “start fresh at college.”
