Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan witnessed another drop at the box office on its ninth day in theatres, recording its lowest single-day collection since release. Despite the decline, the action entertainer continues to enjoy a steady second-week run, with the Tamil version remaining the film's biggest contributor. Directed by H Vinoth, the film has now crossed Rs 157 crore net in India and is closing in on the Rs 270 crore mark worldwide. Meanwhile, the Vijay-starrer also faced disruptions in Karnataka, where protests linked to the Cauvery water dispute led to the cancellation of scheduled screenings at a theatre in Mandya.
Jana Nayagan Records Its Lowest Collection On Day 9
According to Sacnilk, Jana Nayagan earned an estimated Rs 3.55 crore net in India on Day 9, registering a 12.3 per cent drop from its Day 8 collection of Rs 4.05 crore. The film was screened across 4,165 shows nationwide on Friday. With the latest numbers, Tamil Nadu chief minister's film has collected Rs 157.10 crore net and Rs 183.45 crore gross in India.
Overseas, the film added Rs 2 crore on Day 9, taking its international gross to Rs 85 crore. As a result, Jana Nayagan has grossed Rs 268.45 crore worldwide. For comparison, the film had earned Rs 4.05 crore net on Day 8 across 5,496 shows, taking its India gross to Rs 179.33 crore, India net to Rs 153.55 crore, overseas gross to Rs 83 crore, and worldwide gross to Rs 262.33 crore.
The Tamil version continued to dominate collections on Day 9, contributing Rs 3.20 crore, while the Hindi version collected Rs 30 lakh and the Telugu version added Rs 5 lakh. The Tamil version also recorded an overall occupancy of 24.96 per cent, with night shows posting the highest attendance at 35.54 per cent.
Karnataka Protests Disrupt Screenings
The film also ran into controversy in Karnataka after protests linked to the ongoing Cauvery water dispute. According to Mathrubhumi, scheduled screenings at Gurushree Theatre in Mandya were cancelled after members of a Kannada organisation staged demonstrations outside the venue. The protests followed the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee's (CWRC) direction asking Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for 15 days. Protesters tore down Jana Nayagan posters and urged the theatre management to stop screening the film. Police intervened to prevent demonstrators from entering the premises before the theatre cancelled the scheduled shows. Jana Nayagan opened strongly in Karnataka, collecting around Rs 11.25 crore on its first day. The state emerged as the film's second-largest regional market after Tamil Nadu.
